Welcome to this week's AI edition of The Commerce Brief 🤖

THIS WEEK’S AI INDUSTRY UPDATES

01. ASOS has become the first UK retailer to bring shoppable video content to ChatGPT, allowing customers to discover ASOS products directly within the platform, explore them through video and then complete purchases on ASOS.com. The move marks a significant step in connecting conversational AI with shoppable content. (source)

02. Debenhams Group has become the first UK retailer to launch AI-driven in-app checkout on Meta, currently available for US shoppers. The feature is powered by PayPal's Agentic Commerce Services and allows customers to complete purchases seamlessly within Meta's apps, removing the need to navigate to a separate site. (source)

03. Klarna has launched an AI-powered Shopping Search app in OpenAI's ChatGPT, enabling users to describe the types of products they want and receive visual results with live prices, availability and offers from multiple merchants in a single conversation. Users are then redirected to the merchant's site to complete purchases. (source)

04. Google has announced its AI-powered Universal Cart and Gemini Spark assistant, transforming online shopping into a cross-platform experience spanning Search, YouTube, Gmail and Gemini. The centralised checkout reduces direct brand-consumer interaction, with AI agents increasingly making purchase decisions on behalf of consumers, forcing brands to optimise data, inventory accuracy and product metadata to remain visible. 05. WHSmith has launched an AI-powered retail assistant at Melbourne Airport, designed to help travellers make quicker and more confident purchasing decisions. Customers scan a QR code in-store and chat with the assistant on their phone, receiving personalised product recommendations based on their needs. (source)

06. Simkhai is building a separate AI-powered e-commerce site, Simkhai.ai, designed to bring more of its in-store styling experience online. The site will sit alongside Simkhai.com rather than replace it, with a digital button allowing shoppers to move between the main site and the AI storefront. (source)

07. Samsung and Google are launching AI-powered smart glasses through collaborations with fashion brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The move intensifies competition in the smart eyewear space, following the launch of EssilorLuxottica and Meta's second-generation smart glasses last month. (source)
